ABSTRACT INCREASING THERMAL STABILITY OF POLY(VINYLCHLORIDE) BY CALCIUM - ZINC STABILISERS GÖKTEPE, S. Evren MSc in Chemical Eng. Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Devrim Balköse 1996, 75 pages In this thesis, synergistic effect of Ca and Zn stearate is studied on thermal stabilization of poly vinylchloride (PVC). Solvent casting method is applied for preparing the samples. PVC, PVC with 5% Ca stearate, PVC with 4% Ca stearate and 1% Zn stearate, PVC with 2.5% Ca stearate and 2.5% Zn stearate, PVC with 1% Ca stearate and 4% Zn stearate, PVC with 5% Zn stearate films are prepared by dissoving them in methyl ethylketone (MEK). These films are heated at 140°C and 160°C for different lime intervals. Color assesment, IR and UV spectroscopy, x-ray flourescence and diffraction, DSC and TGA analysis are used for identifing the films before and after the heat treatment. Synergistic effect between Ca and Zn stearate is observed with 4: 1 Ca to Zn ratio on IR and UV analysis. Best heat stabilization is occured with 4% Ca stearate and 1% Zn stearate mixture. On the other hand TGA technique showed no synergistic effect with Ca and Zn, stearate on PVC heat stabilization.
