Özet

135 At the begining of this study, the avarage chronological ages for both groups were 17.56 years. For retentive purposes, in the first group Sarhan appliance was used. This appliance is characterized by its absence of any acrylic, solely consisting of a labial, lingual arch and Adams clasps. In the second group, a Hawley appliance consisting of a labial arch, C clasps and palatal or lingual acrylic parts was used. This study lasted for nine months. During the first six months appliances were used all day, except for the times when the patients were eating. For the last three months appliances were used only at nights. In order to investigate the changes and adaptations during the retention period, 36 measurments on the lateral cephalometric and postero-anterior films, 6 measurments on the orthodontic casts, 20 measurments of the soft tissue, 2 occlusal registration and 9 periodontal measurments were carried out and evaluated statistically using“Mann - Whitney”and“Wilcoxon”tests. During the retention period dentoalveolar and skeletal relations were preserved; the stability of intraoral and extraoral soft tissue pressure during this research showed that soft tissue adaptation was achieved; posterior occlusal contact numbers increased during this research; this increase was higher in the Sarhan group than in the Hawley136 group. Although, tongue pressure was found to be higher than the lip and cheek pressures, the teeth didn't relapse. The stability of the teeth was thought to be due to the good occlusal relations. Oral hygiene and periodontal tissue health were found to be important factors in the dentoalveolar stability.135 At the begining of this study, the avarage chronological ages for both groups were 17.56 years.
