Özet
At the beginning of the treatment and at the end of 3 months plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, probing attachment level and the position of the gingival marjin were assessed. The results of this study suggested that all the treatment modalities are effective in producing statistically significant alterations in respect to clinical parameters. At the end of this study which continued for 3 months no statistically significant alteration was found among the treatment modalities. Conventional treatment modalities are essential in the treatment of periodontal diseases, nevertheless considering the topographic structure of the periodontal pocket; subgingival drug application might also possess adjunctive properties in certain cases.

SUMMARY The role of bacterial plaque in the etiology of inflammatory periodontal disease has been well established. Basen on the association of bacterial plaque and the periodontal disease, systemic and topical chemoterapeutic agents have been used as adjunctive methods for treating periodontitis. Local application has the advantages of delivering the antibacterial drug directly to the subgingival bacteria hence increasing the range of suitable antimicrobials and also faciliating the use of drugs at higher concentrations. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical effect of 1 % chlorhexidine gel (w/w) and 1 % chlorhexidine solution locally applied to the periodontal pocket prior to subgingival curettage and following subgingival curettage. The study included 21 patients with moderate adult periodontitis. The following treatments were applied to the patients : - 1 % chlorhexidine solution application 1 week prior to scaling and root planning. - 1 % chlorhexidine solution application following scaling and root planning. - 1 % chlorhexidine gel (w/w) application prior to scaling and root planning. - 1 % chlorhexidine gel (w/w) application following scaling and root planning. 63At the beginning of the treatment and at the end of 3 months plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, probing attachment level and the position of the gingival marjin were assessed.
