Özet
Bu tezde otistik çocuklar ve ebeveynlerinin medya kullanımları ve algıları ile ebeveynlerin otizm ve otistik çocuklara dair haberleri nasıl alımladıkları haberleri okurken ve tartışırken hangi söylemlerle nasıl ilişkilendikleri, haber anlatılarıyla ilgili neler düşündükleri sorgulanmıştır. Bu doğrultuda habercilikte yeni bir yönelime işaret eden hak haberciliğinin çerçevesi kullanılarak otizm ve otistik çocuklarla ilgili haberlerde sorunlar olup olmadığı, ne tür sorunlar olduğu, otizmin medyada temsiliyle ilgili literatürde ortaya çıkarılan bulgularla hangi yönlerden paralellik gösterdiği ya da hangi noktalarda literatürden farklılaştığını ortaya koyabilmek için otizmle ilgili haberler toplanarak analiz edilmiştir. Hak haberciliğinin çerçevesinden yararlanılması otizm ve otistik çocukların da hak temelli bir perspektiften ele alınarak otizmin nöroçeşitlilik yaklaşımının benimsenmesini gerektirmiştir. Araştırmanın otistik çocuklar ve ebeveynlerinin medya kullanımları ve algılarının araştırıldığı ikinci kısım ile otizm deneyimine sahip ebeveynlerin medyada yer alan otizm haberlerine dair okumalarını içeren üçüncü kısım otizmle ilgili Ankara'da yer alan iki sivil toplum kuruluşunda gerçekleştirilen katılımcı gözlem ile derinlemesine görüşmelere dayanmaktadır. Buna göre araştırmanın ikinci kısmında otistik çocuklar ve ebeveynlerinin medya kullanımlarında ve tanımlarında otizm deneyiminin nasıl bir rol oynadığı yine bu alandaki literatürle birlikte değerlendirilmektedir. Otizme dair haberlerin alımlanmasını içeren araştırmanın üçüncü kısmında ise otizm deneyimine sahip ebeveynlerin haber metinlerindeki otizm söylemini nasıl açımladıkları, bu haberler karşısında neler hissettikleri ve ne tür okumalar yaptıkları, bu okumaları yaparken nerede konumlandıkları ile okumalarında hangi unsurların rol oynadığı değerlendirilmektir. Tezde teorik ve metodolojik olarak Kültürel Çalışmalar geleneği içindeki izleyici ve alımlama yaklaşımları ile Stuart Hall'ın hegemonik okuma, müzakereci okuma ve muhalif/eleştirel okuma ayrımından yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda haberlerde otistik çocuklarla ilgili birçok hak ihlali saptanırken, ebeveynlerin medya kullanımı ve algısı ile otizme dair haberlerin alımlamasının otizm deneyimine, toplumsal cinsiyete ve otizm alanına aktif bir biçimde katılımına göre şekillendiği görülmüştür.

This thesis investigates the media use and its perceptions among children with autism and their parents as well as investigating how parents receive news about autism and children with autism, the discourse that they relate the news they had read and discussed, and they think about the news narrative in this regard. In this respect, using the framework of the rights journalism which points to a new direction in news reporting, news about the autism were collected and analyzed in order to reveal whether there are problems in the news about autism and children with autism, the types of the problems, the parallels and differences between the findings in the relevant literature about media representation of autism. The use of the framework of rights journalism has necessitated the adoption of the neurodiversity approach by addressing the autism and children with autism from a rights-based perspective. The second part of the study, in which the media use and perceptions among children with autism and their parents were studied, and the third part of the study that discusses the reception of autism news in the media by the parents who had an autism experience were based on in-depth interviews with participant observation in two autism-related non-governmental organizations in Ankara, Turkey. Accordingly, in the second part of the research, the role of the autism experience in the media use and definitions among children with autism and their parents were evaluated in accordance with the literature in this area. In the third part of the research, which addresses the reception of news about autism, the thoughts of parents with autism experience on the autism discourse in the news narrative, their feelings and readings on these news narratives, their positions with respect to these readings as well as the factors effective in this regard were assessed. Theoretical and methodologically, the audience and reception approach in the Cultural Studies tradition and Stuart Hall's distinction on hegemonic reading, deliberative reading and critical reading were utilized in the thesis. As a result of the study, numerous rights violations were identified about children with autism in the news and it was observed that media use and perception of parents and the reception of news shape in accordance with their autism experience, social gender and active participation in the field of autism.
