Özet
Bu çalışma, Batılı bakışın ürettiği Doğu coğrafyası ve bedenlerinin 19. yüzyıl ile sınırlı olmadığını belirleme amacındadır. Bu doğrultuda çalışmanın ana kapsamı Postoryantalist çağı incelemeye almaktır. Postoryantalizm'i inceleyen bu çalışmanın temel argümanları; Doğu-Batı için ayrı ayrı üretilen kimliklerin, özne ve coğrafya üzerinden Görsel Kültür alanına nasıl yansıdığı ve nasıl somutlaştırıldığı üzerinedir. Batılı olanın yeniden ürettiği Doğu kimliğinde Doğulu olanın ne denli etkisi olduğu da yine çalışmanın esas aldığı sorunsallarından biridir. Postoryantalizm, Oryantalist disiplinden miras kalan kodlarla 21. yüzyılın Doğu bilgisini üreten bir algılama biçimi olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Görsel Kültür disiplini içinde Postoryantalist imge incelediğinde Oryantalist bakış açısının 19. yüzyılla sınırlı olmadığı ve günümüze değin sürdürüldüğü görülmektedir. Postoryantalist bilgi dâhilinde Doğu coğrafyasının şiddet ile birlikte betimlendiği imge, 11 Eylül saldırısının ardından“terörizm”e dönüşmüştür.“Terörizm”ile birlikte Doğulu bedenler“terörist”özneler olarak tek tip bir imge halini almıştır. 21. yüzyıl, -bilhassa küreselleşme hareketinin ardından- Doğu coğrafyası ve bedenlerine dair teknolojik enformasyon ağlarında hızlı ve sürekli bir biçimde Doğu imgesinin dolaşıma sokulduğu bir süreci başlatmıştır. Bu imgeler“terörist”şablonu üzerinden terörü bedenleştirmekte ve sürekli tekrar ederek Doğulu özneyi yeniden üretmektedir. Terörün bedenleştirilmesi“terörist”özne üzerinden üretildiği gibi, savaş coğrafyasının ortasında sıkışan ya da göç etmeye zorlanan öznelerin acıları üzerinden de üretilmektedir. Her iki biçimde de Doğu coğrafyası, Oryantalist disiplinde olduğu gibi Postoryantalist“episteme”de de“öteki”olarak üretilerek Batı karşısında aşağı bir konuma sabitlenmiştir. Terörü eyleyen olarak Doğulu beden, önlenmesi gereken bir tehdidi betimlerken, savaştan mustarip olan Doğulu bedenler yardıma muhtaç birer özne olarak betimlenmiştir.“Terörist”ve“muhtaç”bedenler, küresel çağda geç-kapitalist tahakkümün -ideolojik olarak- hem bir sonucu hem de meşruiyeti için“üretilen”kanıtlarıdır.

Given the fact that the Orientalist discourse of the nineteenth century has passed on our times, this study aims to investigate the ways in which in the age of global capitalism the European gaze generates an imagined geography of the East and produces a series of the imagined Eastern body. From this perspective, the scope of the research is to examine the Postorientalist worldview through contemporary artworks as well as visual materials circulated in visual culture. The main preoccupation is to question the (re-)production of identities as the result of the East-West dichotomy in contemporary visual culture. The focus is on the embodiments of the East as the effect of the Western imagination and of the perceived differences between Eastern world and Western culture. When one examines Post-Orientalism through the materials circulated in contemporary visual culture, one can realize the fact that the Orientalist discipline had not come to an end towards the end of the nineteenth century. Rather it remains active in the Western thought and imagination. After 9/11 Attacks, the image of the East has come to signify the violence and the terror. In the age of Post-Orientalism, Eastern bodies have turned to be the“terrorist”subjects associated with global terrorism. Due to advanced technologies, the images of the East have been circulated rapidly and widely. These images serve as the stereotypes for 'the Eastern terrorists' and thus endlessly reproduces the Orientalist worldview of the past centuries. Moreover, the discourse of terror and terrorism actively produces a weak subject in need of help, a migrant who is trapped in the middle of the war, who is dislocated and forced to migrate. In both forms, the Eastern geography is generated as the“Other”and subordinated as 'the Eastern body' as the result of the Post-Orientalist“episteme”informed by the Orientalist knowledge and perception. The study questions the depiction of the Eastern bodies and the geographies as 'the suffering subjects' of the war or 'the terrorist threats' coming from the East. It is argued throughout the discussion that“terrorist subjects”or weak bodies are the ideological figures produced by the centres of the global West revealing the realities of global domination and subordination on the one hand and serve as its self-legitimation on the other.
