Özet
Bu tezin konusu, 1990'lardan günümüze Amerikan Bilim-kurgu filmlerindeki mekânların sosyal, kültürel ve teknolojik boyutlarının incelenmesidir. Amaç, filmdeki mekânların bir içmimar ve tasarımcı gözüyle incelenerek, filmlerdeki tasarım anlayışının toplumun sosyokültürel ve teknolojik yapısıyla olan etkileşimini ortaya çıkarılmasıdır. Filmlerde tasvir edilen gelecek kurguları, içerisinde teknolojik, sosyolojik ve tasarımsal özellikler taşır. Gösterilen toplum yapıları ve hikâyenin geçtiği mekânlar birbiriyle etkileşim ve bağlantı içindedir. Mekân tasarımının bilim-kurgu filmlerindeki önemi büyüktür. Filmin içindeki mekân tasarımlarında yaratıcılık aracılığıyla yepyeni ve var olmayan dünyalar tasvir edilmektedir. Geleceğe ilişkin tasarımların hem günün teknoloji kavrayışını temsil eder hem tasarım anlayışını ortaya koyar hem de film anlatısına hizmet eden yeni bir film evreni yaratır. Bu çalışmada, bilim kurgu sinemasında film mekânlarının film anlatısını nasıl geliştirdiği, karakterler ve olay örgüsü gibi önemli rol oynadığı saptanmıştır. Bilim kurgu filmlerinde mekânların, geleceğin dünyasını hangi teknolojik ve tasarımsal biçimlerde tasavvur ettiği ve bu tasarımların ne anlamlar ifade ettiği araştırılmıştır.

The topic of this thesis is to study the social, cultural and technological dimensions of space in American Science-fiction films from the 1990's to the present. The goal is to scrutinize space in the films with the eyes of an interior architect and designer and to reveal the interaction between the understanding of design in the film and the socio-cultural and technological structure of the society. The fiction for future depicted in the films includes technological, sociological and designing aspects. The social structures and the space in which the story takes place are in interaction and connected with each other. Space design has great significance in science-fiction films. In the space design of films, new and non-existing worlds are delineated through creativity. These designs pertaining to future both represents the grasp of technology of the day and exhibits the understanding of design, while it creates a new universe of the film that serves the narration in the film. This study pins down how film spaces in the science fiction cinema enhance the narration of the film and plays an important role just like characters and the plotline. The thesis investigates in what kinds of technology and design the space in science fiction films envisions the future world and what these designs mean.
