Özet

In this study, relationship between multiple sclerosis (MS), and depressi on was investigated. Thirty MS and 30 myotonic dystrophy (MD) patients as a control group were interviewed and following scales and tests were introduced s 1) Psychiatric examination form (The form that prepsed for liaison psychiatry section of the department of psychiatry, istanbul medical school). £) Hamilton depression scale. 3) Beck depression inventory. 4) Automatic thoughts questionnaire. 5) ılness distress scale. 6) Physical performance scale. 7) Mini-mental state examinati on. Chi-squre test, t-test, RNOVR and correlation tests were used for statist ical anal ysis. Diagnoses were made according to DSMIIJ-R criteria. No si gni ficant difference was found between both groups in disease duration, age of onset and disabi 1 it y degrees. 15 (% 50) patients in MS group and 13 (“< 43.3) patients in MD group were diagnosed as depressi ve syndrom. No si gni ficant difference was found in depressed patients when comparing both groups. No signi ficant correlation was found between two groups in disease duration and depression. 60In both grorups, it was observed that depression gets nor se by deteri orati on and increasing disabi 2 it y. In MS group, patient that had the chronic progressive form of disease were found to be more depressed than the pat ients that had remittant and chronic progress i ve-remittant form. It is known that stress factors can trigger the MS symp- tomg or can worsen them. In this study it was observed that 14 <% 46.4) MS patients had intense stress factors before the onset of symptoms. In order to investigate the relationship between the cerebral involvement and depression) cranial MRI could only be done to 17 (% 56) MS patients. There was no si gnificant difference between peri ventricul er and multi pie involvement in forms of dep ression. In 4 of the 5 patients that euphoria was found, perivent- riculer invol vement was detected and this finding supports the hypothesis of the relationship between cerebral invol vement and euphoria. In this study it can be seen that there is no relations hip between the depression in MS and disease durat ion but disabi lity score and course of the disease is related with depression in MS. consequent 1 yf it can be seen in this study that we support the hypotesis of depression in MS is reacti ve in nature but not due to the cerebral invol vement. £1In this study, relationship between multiple sclerosis (MS), and depressi on was investigated.
