-2 ABSTRACT The center of Gönen (which is administrative district) that forms the investiga tion field is placed in the South Marmara Part in the Marmara region. As administra tive, it is connected with Balıkesir (which is administrative province) and it's distance is 1 14 km to the center of Balıkesir. The total area of Gönen is 1 152 km2. The field of investigation is placed between 46° 06' latitude and 27° 38' longitude. Gönen is bordered by Manyas and Bandırma from the East; Balıkesir and Balya from the South; Yenice, Çan and Biga from the West; Erdek and the Marmara Sea from the North. The center of Gönen is placed in the valley which is formed by Gönen stream and rivulents that are the side branches of Gönen Stream. The are eleven wards in Gönen and 8452 buildings in the center of it. According to the data of 1994, its popu lation is about 31.836. The literacy rate is 98 %. In the field of investigation, there are 90 villages and two municipalities -Gönen and Sarıköy- In general, the villages are set up in the plains and the woodland parts. The dwellings and the settlemant show a tidy style. In Gönen, the features of wild Mediterranean climate -the summer is hot and the winter is rainy- is seen. Its economy has been developing in advanced and technical level depending upon the agriculture, trade, tourism, manufactured goods and indus try. The most important flowing water of Gönen is Gönen stream. Its length is 55 km. The most important mountains of it are: In the North, Mount Armutçuk (905 m.) and Mount Hodul, in the West Mount Aladağ (860 m); in the South-West Mount Karlık (950 m.); in the South and the South-East Mount Dikmen (600 m.).
