SUMMARY Silifke plain is a part of Silifke district» which is in the province of İçel. It was formed at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea by accumulation of materials carried by Göksu River. Since Silifke plain is near the Mediterranean Sea» the climate of the area is affected by the sea and a Mediterranean climate is seen. Urban, agricultural and industrial areas» grasslands» sand-dunes and beaches are present in Silifke Plain. In Silifke and its surrounding» the settlement started in early times. In the area» different civilizations such as Hittite» Assyria» Greek» Roman» Byzantine and Ottoman lived. After 1950» the land was opened for agriculture hence» the population has increased in a considerable extent. Agriculture is the most important economical activity in the region. In the mountainous part of Silifke» cattle breeding is the main economic activity. Fishing is also an important part of the economy. The paper factory in Tasucu is the only industrial establishment in the district. Especially after 1985» domestic tourism has improved in eastern and western Silifke at the coast of Mediterranean Sea due to the historical» natural and cultural values of the region. 230
