Knyaz V. F. Odoyevskiy was born in Moskow in 1804. He was the son of a noble family. He received his secondary education at“Blagorodniy Pansion”, where the children of the nobility were educated. Odoyevskiy, who started his literary career when he was at high school, produced his best works between 1830 and 1844. The thesis focuses on the works written during this period. Odoyevskiy, in whose stories supernaturel and fantastic elements occupy the larger portion, is considered to be a romantic writer. He observes life with the influence of romantic philosophy and reveals the conflict between man's tendency to mateerial values within him and psychological and moral ones. He also made use of the European romanticism, which had a short-term influence on Russian literature, in his treatment of sociological and economic issues of the period in which he lived. The best examples of such a treatment can be seen in his Utopian stories. Odoyevskiy criticised the way of living of the Russian upper class from the point of view of morality in most of his works. He blames them of being aimlessly fond of entertainment and of trying to imitate the negative aspects of the Europen culture. He examines the reasons for such a way of living in the stories he wrote and tries to study the system of education offered to the upper class. The stories which concentrate on the discussion of this educational system are extremely interesting. Odoyevskiy devoted some parts of his works to art and men of art. He emphasizes the importance of art in man's life and points out that it occupies an undeniable functionin his development. In such stories he seeks for an answer to the question,“Who is the genuine man of art?”. He comes to the conclusion that an artist is a man who offers humanity the humanitarian values and divine elements which a human being bears by way of concrete works of art. The style he employs for didactic and philosophical matters is rather hard to comprehend. He uses the words he borrows from science, philosophy and art either literally or metaphorically and employs complicated sentence structures whenever he thinks it is necessary. For this reason, Odoyevskiy was able to appeal to and has been able to please both his contemporaries and writers of the later period such as, A. S. Pushkin, M. Y. Lermontov, İ. S. Turgenev and L. N. Tolstoy. It has been observed that Odoyevskiy seems to be closer to the European romanticism and western culture than the abovementioned writers and that he has not only depicted the Russian way of living but dealt with more general and universal issues in order to tell the reader what a human being is.
