ABSTRACT CONFINED CONCRETE BEHAVIOUR UNDER REPEATED AND REVERSED STRAIN GRADIENT ZUBAIR IDDRIS YAHYA M.Sc. in Civil Engineering Supervisor:- Prof. Dr. Tuğrul Tankut September 1988, 178 -Pages. An experimental and analytical investigation of confined concrete behaviour under repeated and reversed strain gradient is reported. In the experimental work carried out at University of 1 2 Toronto by Professors A.T. Tankut and S.M. Uzumeri, three identical specimens were tested. Two of the specimens were subjected to repeated and reversed triangular strain gradient "and the third which was used as ref rence, to monotonic Loading with triangular strain gradient. In the present study, the data obtained in the Toronto tests have been evaluated and interpreted. Some commomnly used confined concrete models were applied to the test specimens to obtain various theoretical predictions of behaviour. Experimental results clearly reveal that, the 1. Head, Dept. of Civil Eng., Toronto University, Canada. 1X1performance of reinforced concrete structural members subjected to reversed strain gradient ( commonly the case under seismic effects ) was distinctly inferior to the performance under monotonic or repeated loading. Analytical results were parallel. It was clearly indicated that, all the analytical models used overestimate the performance of members under reversed strain gradient, although some of them can reasonably predict the behaviour of members subjected to monotonic or reversed strain gradient.
