Deep shaft process is a very efficient high rate aerobic bioreactor providing relatively high rate of treatment of wastewaters. Because of the high mass transfer rates provided limitation of dissolved oxygen concentration is solved with the special configuration of deep shaft process. Similarly, substrate transfer rate is not a limiting factor for the efficiency. The main limiting factor in that process is the reduction in the sludge settling characteristics which creates problems in solid-liquid separation occurring when high loading rates applied. In order to eliminate this problem cell immobilisation is experimented as a method of process enhancement. In order to examine the efficiency and applicability of the method a bench scale setup comprising test and control reactors was used. Test reactor was operated to observe outcomes of the system that contains carrier particles with 8 % volumetric concentration. Control reactor was operated only with mixed liquor without any support media addition to enable comparison of the conditions and performance of the reactors with and without support media utilisation. To evaluate the affects and applicability cell immobilisation method by the use of a commercially available floating biomass support media PROSIL® some tests on the reactors mixed liquor and effluent samples were carried out. Organic removal efficiency of the reactors was measured with COD and TOC tests. Sludge characteristics were observed with sludge settling test and SSVI, hindered sludge settling rate calculation and also by measuring suspended solids concentration in the supernatant. Reactor content was also tested for MLSS, MLVSS, DO and pH values. Those tests have shown that the organic carbon removal efficiency of the reactor was not affected from media addition. However, there was an improvement in sludge settling characteristics which might be beneficial for the solution of solid liquid separation limitation in high rate reactors. Degree of cell immobilisation was monitored with dry mass measurement, respirometric study and direct cell count technique. These measurements indicated that high turbulence in the reactor prevented high biofilm formation rate. However, obtained biofilm has higher respiration rates than suspended microorganisms.
