The subject of the transportation of Caspian and Middle East energy resources to Europe has become increasingly crucial in the late 2000s with many pipeline projects being developed to establish a“fourth corridor”with a view to diversifying European Union's energy supplies and reducing its dependence on (primarily) Russian energy supplies. In this respect, Turkey, with its geographical proximity to countries/regions possessing more than 70% of the proven global oil and gas reserves, is of critical importance in any effort to bring Caspian and Middle East resources to the EU countries outside the influence of Russia. The paper puts forward that the European Union requires a greater energy security in light of its growing demand and tighter supplies; and dependence on primarily Russian gas. In this respect, this paper set outs Turkey's role in the supply of Caspian and Middle East hydrocarbons to the EU countries. The paper concludes that Turkey, as a transit country located at the crossroads of major oil and gas suppliers, plays an increasingly important role in the energy security of the EU.
