This dissertation examines the effects of the relationship between EU and NATO on the Common Security and Defense Policy of the EU. Under this relationship, U.S. approach, EU missions, the special case of Libya, headquarters debate and the battlegroup concepts are analysed through the perspective of balance of power theory. The role of the U.S. coming out of its global power status is the determinant factor in this relationship. It is argued that since the U.S. is a significant backer of NATO and the most important member of it, the relationship between EU and NATO presents itself in mostly a bandwagoning but also sometimes balancing way from the EU side against the U.S. during its pursuit of becoming a“distinct”and credible security power in its own right.
