This research project is a mixed method analysis on the collusiveness and competitiveness during the first five parliamentary terms of the European Parliament (EP). The quantitative component of the study indicates that the European Parliament is most competitive on the“Economics”variable and most collusive on the“Internal EP”variable. Overall, in temporal terms competition in the identified 7 issue areas is increasing; the European Parliament is more competitive when a policy issue has a social component; and the European Parliament appears to have come closer to the left-right political axis as opposed to the integration/non-integration axis (referred to as 'axis transformation' in the analysis) thereby representing the commonly present national political cleavage structure in Europe.
