The kinetic modelling of Miscanthus pyrolysis was studied carrying out“Martin's Method”to investigate the effects of different operating parameters on the pyrolysis kinetics. The aim of the study was to advance the current state of knowledge of Miscanthus pyrolysis in the literature and gain better insight in the design and optimisation of thermo chemical conversion routes associated with the pyrolysis. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis was carried out on Miscanthus sample. The sample was heated up to the maximum temperature of 400°C from ambient temperature under inert atmosphere varying the heating rate (10, 20 and 30 °C min-1), the sample mass (2.5 and 5 mg) and the moisture contents (5 and 8%) to analyse pyrolysis kinetics of Miscanthus. The DSC data obtained was useful in describing chemical and physical aspects of the pyrolysis process. The experimental data were interpreted using the proposed method which only considered four pyrolysis events: removal of water, release of light and combustible volatiles and high temperature pyrolysis. Each event was described by an Arrhenius type expression and then a non-linear least squared method was used to perform curve fitting. However, the last event was poorly described by the proposed method since the event could be observed in a very narrow temperature range. The unexpected exothermic peaks detected on DSC curves at high heating rate, mass and moisture content raised the possibility of spontaneous or self-sustainable pyrolysis. The interpretation of DSC curves concluded that the DSC technique was a highly sensitive and, therefore, reproducibility of the experimental results was a significant issue in this study. The low level of reproducibility of the DSC results was related to poor thermal contact between lid, pan and sample and the heterogeneity nature of Miscanthus sample. The unsatisfied performance of DSC instrument also indicated the poor repeatability of the experiment. The enthalpy of combustion of Miscanthus was measured burning 0.49 g of Miscanthus sample contained 4.6% moisture content in adiabatic bomb calorimeter. The obtained gross heat value of 17.8 MJ kg-1 indicated the good potential of Miscanthus for supplying heat and power.
