The vulnerable and tense political relations between the European states and energy suppliers led the EU member states to an unpredictable security of supply of energy. Europe's dependence on imported energy is constantly increasing the costs and weakening the political relations with states outside the union. The cases between Russia and Ukraine, the latest economic depression and the challenges on maintaining a better energy mix have been critical aspects on the European energy security. It could be mentioned that increasing oil prices and cut offs are threatening for the EU; however there are also interior reasons that stimulate the unstable energy security. This assessment studies the historical developments in the field of energy with a further overview of the EU policy on energy, indicating the statistics and expectations of the energy consumption and the legal actions taken by Europe. It is implied that maintaining a better energy mix and increasing the energy security could be achieved by increasing the usage of renewable energy such as photovoltaics and wind as well as the realization of several vital policies regarding the energy policy. Meanwhile, the challenges on achieving such goals are addressed, followed by the actions taken by Europe and a brief information on licensing new power plants is studied. This assessment may be useful for understanding the general outlook on the European energy policy and the impacts of the monopoly caused by international suppliers which are characterized as“giants”by many authorities. It is recommended for Europe to reduce its dependence on imported energy as much as possible and to increase promotion of the renewable energy to be produced within the European territories.
