The ultimate aim of this dissertation is to analyze the dynamics of EU decision making with regards to Turkey's accession bid, limiting its query to a European security perspective. Put differently, this research will try to seek an answer to why the EU's approach to Turkey's membership, often termed as 'dragging its feet', came to be shaped as it is today and attempt to identify the underlying security concerns of the EU towards Turkey's accession, aside from the latter's fulfillment of necessary normative and political conditions. Although the Union is not yet fully convinced by Turkey's recent reform efforts, the fact that negotiations have not been terminated at any stage or that even the most staunchest opponents to her membership refrained from impairing Turkey's quest beyond the point of no return indicate that there must be other factors involved, most importantly – and limited to the scope of this research – the strategic security significance of Turkey. In this context, this work argues that security considerations have a significant impact on EU decision making regarding enlargement, specifically with reference to Turkey's bid, as much as or even beyond other economic, political, humanitarian or social concerns. In line with this argument, this thesis suggests that the Union's decision making process regarding Turkey's membership quest is shaped and funneled by EU preference for the future of the European security architecture.
