Introduction: Homeopathy, founded by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) was, is known as a healing complementary method. The term derives from the Greek words“homoion”(similar) and“pathos”(suffering) and means symptoms of a disease can be cured by a remedy that leads to similar symptoms in a healthy person. Many different clinical studies have demonstrated a positive effect of homeopathy. The following meta analysis should point out the effect of homeopathy in surgical wisdom tooth extraction. Material and Methodology: Studies were searched in databases and 10 studies were identified published between 1980 and 2005. They fulfilled all inclusion criteria necessary for meta analysis. Results: For statistical evaluation MetaAnalyst 3.13 was used. Nine studies could be included into the meta-analyses, 7 studies had binary endpoints and 5 studies continuous endpoints; two studies had both binary and continuous endpoints. The studies were divided in two analyses. The pooled effect sizes were calculated according to the DerSimonian-Laird-analysis: 0.706 (CI 0.146 to 3.403) for binary endpoints and -0,221 (CI 0.493 to 0.052) for continuous endpoints. Conclusion: This meta-analysis shows a positive effect of homeopathy in operational wisdom tooth extraction. However, it is necessary to conduct further studies.
