Özet
Bu tezde on dokuzuncu yüzyıl İngiliz edebiyatı yazarlarından Charles Dickens'ın A Christmas Carol, George MacDonald'ın Phantastes ve Lewis Carroll'ın Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ile Through the Looking-glass and What Alice Found There eserlerinin on dokuzuncu yüzyıl İngiltere'sinin sosyal, kültürel ve politik durumu ve yazarların yaşam ışığında incelenecektir. Çalışmanın amacı, eserlerin imgesel açıdan incelenmesi ve Carl Gustav Jung'un arketip teorisi bağlamında incelenebilirliğinin ortaya konmasıdır. Birinci bölümde çalışmanın kuramsal boyutu olan arketip teorisinin ortaya çıkışı ve tarihsel sürecinden bahsedilmektedir. Bu bölüm, Carl Gustav Jung'un arketip teorisinin açıklanması, rüya, kompleks ve nevroz kavramları üzerinde durulması, son olarak da çalışma boyunca örnekleri saptanan arketip ve arketipsel imgelerin tanımlanmasına dayanmaktadır. Bu bölümde yer alan kavramlar, takip eden bölümlerdeki kuramsal incelemenin temelini oluşturur. Çalışmanın ikinci, üçüncü ve dördüncü bölümleri her bir bölümde bir yazarın ele alındığı halde sistematik bir şekilde ilerler. İkinci bölümde Dickens'ın yaşamının ve dönemin toplumsal sorunlarının, üçüncü bölümde MacDonald'ın teolojik görüşlerinin, dördüncü bölümde ise Carroll'ın dönemin çocuk algısına ve çocuk edebiyatı eserlerine karşı tutumu ile dönemin keşiflerinin eserlere ne şekilde yansıdıkları değerlendirilmektedir. Her bir bölümde hilebaz, yaşlı bilge adam, anima, animus, yeniden doğuş, özben, persona, gölge, çocuk, anne ve baba gibi arketiplerinin örnekleri tespit edilmekte ve bu eserlerin Jung'un arketip teorisi bağlamında incelenebilirliği ortaya konmaktadır. Sonuç kısmında ise tüm bu veriler ve saptamalar dahilinde eserlerin ortak ve farklı yönlerinin değerlendirmesi yapılmaktadır.

The present thesis focuses on the four chosen fantasy works in the nineteenth century English literature: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Phantastes by George MacDonald and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ile Through the Looking- glass and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll. The literary works are aimed to analyzed regarding the lives and opinions of the authors and the representations of Jungian Archetypes such as persona, anima, animus, shadow, wise old man, mother, father, child, trickster, rebirth and self. Archetypal Theory, which forms the theoretical base of this work is presented in Chapter I. In this chapter, the birth and the history of the archetypal theory and criticism are mentioned, terms such as dreams, complexes, and neurosis are examined, and all the archetypes and archetypal images that is used throughout the work are explained. The explained terms form the basis of the theoretical analysis of the following chapters. Chapter II, III and IV flows systematically with each chapter given to each author. Chapter II analyzes the traces of the life of Charles Dickens and the social problems of the century, chapter III analyzes the the traces of MacDonald's theological view, and chapter IV analyzes the traces of Carroll's opinions on the idea of childhood and children's literature in the four chosen literary works. In each chapter, archetypes and archetypal images such as trickster, wise old man, anima, animus, rebirth, self, persona, shadow, child, mother and father are applied to the characters of the chosen novels. Thus, the appropriateness of the application of Jungian archetypes to the chosen literary works is proved. In the conclusion part, the differences and similarities among the chosen works are synthesized in terms of the worldviews of the authors presented in the novels and the Jungian archetypes.
