ABSTRACT Reliable flood estimates are needed for planning of hydraulic structures. For the sizing of levees and storage works, it is necessary to establish the magnitude and characteristics of a Standard Project Flood, which represents the most severe hydrometeorologic conditions for which it is economically practical to provide flood control works. Frequently in hydrology it is necessary to estimate event magnitudes at places where there are no observations. Regional flood frequency analysis gives a solution not only in estimating the design events efficiently but also in providing design event magnitudes at sites where no hydrologic information is available or at gages with short-term records. The objectives of a regional flood frequency analysis are to estimate the T-year flood magnitude Q-r at any river location in a given region, mainly at ungauged river basin sites, and to improve at-site estimates based on limited data. In this study, the regional analysis of annual peak floods at the Büyük Menderes River Basin has been investigated. The basin located in West Anatolia in the southwestern section of Turkey. The watershed area drained by the B. Menderes River and its tributaries is about 25.000 km2. In order to decide the most appropriate probability distribution function for the basin, Kolmogorov-Sirnirnov and Chi-square goodness of fit tests have been applied. Regional relationships between the mean annual flood yield and drainage area, and between the coefficients of skew and variation are examined. After excluding of the gauging stations which do not satisfy regional homogeneity conditions, regional values of variation and skewness coefficients are estimated, and regional frequency curve of the basin has been derived. 11
