Özet (Çeviri)

SUMMARY In this study, we tried to make an investigation about tewelve Ionia city-states taking the Herodotus'“History”, Strabon's“Geography”and Pausanias'“Description of Greece”as references. Ionia is an antic region covering the territory between Aiolis and Caria in the Western Anatolian coasts and neighbouring islands. This region began to be called Ionia when Ion people emirgated from Greece to the Western Anatolian coasts as a result of the disintegration of Akha Kingdoms following Dor invasions. According to archaeological data, this emigration took place in 1000-900 B.C. Innumerable small settlements came together within the boun daries of twelve metropolises in Ionia in 8th century B.C. and a religi ous unity has been established, which was referred to as Panionion. These cities were Ephesos, Erythrai, Clazomenai, Colophon, Lebedos, Miletos, Myus, Phocaea, Priene, Teos in the main territory and Chios and Samos in the islands. Mariners from Ionia established numerous colonies by becoming an efficient power center in Black-Sea region and France and Mediterrian coasts of Spain after 7th century B.C. The initiative of Ionia to extend its power area into the inner parts of Anatolia gave rise to a conflict with Lydia. A large part of Ionia came under the domination of Lydia in the era of Croesus (B.C. 560-546) and Persians later.154 In 499 B.C. an era of Persion Wars erupted when Ionia city-states revolted against the Persians Herodotus recounts this period in all its details. The region which came under the domination of Athens began to the administered by Sparta at the end of Peloponnesian War (B.C. 431-404). In 378 B.C. the part of Ionia in the main territory was left into the administration of Persians. Between B.C. 334-301, Ionia was officially independent under the administration of Alexander the Great and I. Antigonus Monophthalmus. Later if was a part of Seleucus and Pergamum Kingdoms and than Romans. In the period of the Roman Empire the city-states such as Miletus, Ephesus and Chios regained their former wealth. A great improvement was made in natural sciences, geography and in the realm of the universe and matter due to the fact that Ionians stamped their rational way of thinking on the way of life in B.C. 6 century. Furthermore they laid the foundation of Greek philosophy and history in their own country and overseas lands. Important artists were raised by Ionians in the creation of architecture, sculpture and casting bronze statues.
