Özet
Bu tez, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau'nun toplumsal sözleşme teorilerindeki siyasi birliğin sorunsallaştırılması betimsel ve kural koyucu yanlarının Michel Foucault'nun eserleri perspektifinden eleştirel bir analiz ve değerlendirmesini sunma çabasıdır. Bu teorilere içkin iktidar kavramı ve bu iktidarın tesisini mümkün kılan birey kavramının yanlış temellendirildiğini savunuyoruz: Çünkü bu teorilerin verili kabul ettikleri birey, sözleşmeciliğin teorik çerçevesinin işleyişini kavrayamadığı yeni bir iktidar formunun, biyo-iktidarın icadıdır. Dolayısıyla toplumsal sözleşme teorisi modern toplumlarda iktidarın doğa, işleyiş ve işlevine dair yeterli bir açıklama sağlamaktan acizdir.

This thesis is an endeavor to present a critical analysis and discussion of the descriptive and prescriptive aspects of the problematization of political association in the social contract theories of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau from the perspective of the work of Michel Foucault. We argue that the conception of power inherent to these theories and the conception. of individual which makes the establishment of this power possible are ill-founded: the 'individual' which these theories deem as a given is an invention of a new form of power, namely bio-power, the operation of which cannot be captured by the theoretical framework of contractarianism. Therefore the social contract theory is incapable of providing an adequate explanation of the nature, o}leration ahd functioning of power in modern societies.
