ABSTRACT Arab solidarity is a comprehensive subject referring to a complex web of interaction between the Arab states, Israel and the foreign powers involved in regional politics. While our study seeks to unravel such a complexity, the hypotheses derived form various sources (International relations, domestic politics, etc.), especially of the alliance and the coalition theories well fit this subject. It helps us to make a heuristic contribution, drawing our attention to the 'centripetal' and the 'centrifugal' factors, their interaction with or manipulation by the foreign powers and the Arab leadership; Egypt. Indeed, as the 'center of gravity' in the Arab world which assumed the 'great power role' in the area, Egypt sought to re-shape Arab politics. Imbued with a hegemonic drive but lacking enough power, she was incapable of strengthening the Arab fences and bolstering the solidarity of the Arab front. Acting as a great challenger to the Arab state system, the interests of Israel and of the foreign powers, she severely strained the pattern of interaction in regional politics. It was the imbroglio of the years 1943-1967 to which our analysis is devoted. We argue that although our study focuses on this quarrelsome period portraying salient ups and downs of the solidarity, it gives insight for the present malaise in inter-Arab politics. IV
