Özet (Çeviri)

SUMMARY This work aims at compiling new lexical units within the vocabulary of standard Turkish language and at observing its evolution in the last period of approximately 35 years. As it is known, rapid developments in science and cultural life exert their influence also on the languages, and, particularly, bring about important changes in dictionaries. 1980 and afterwards, which marks an economic, social and political transformation process in Turkey's recent history, has given rise to an expansion in the Turkish vocabulary too. In this study, in an effort to evaluate this assumption, 1150 neologisms have been found out of new elements in the Turkish language in the last period. These have been examined within the framework of various areas of linguistics. Great majority of the new words in Turkish constitutes the names of scientific and technological innovations. Besides, the bulk of the neologisms related to economy, foreign trade, banking and tourism seems to be in conformity with Turkey's targets, with a view to liberalising her economy and to integrating to the world after 1980. From the linguistic standpoint, the most remarkable feature of neologisms is that the magnitude of them stems from foreign languages. The proportion of these elements to total neologisms amounts to 52,34 percent. The larger parts of foreign neologisms are made up of English words whose foreign nature are easily understood in spoken and writing. There are some problems in the writing of these borrowings as Turkish, having a phonetic orthography, has no such letters like w and x in its alphabet. On studying the Turkish neologisms, another striking result is that, there are very few derivative neologisms. Being an agglutinative language, Turkish is very capable of creating new words, and many new ones were easily derived during the process of the Turkish Language Reform. The proportion of the derivations to the new-fashioned words of the last period is only 5,01 percent. Moreover, the annual rate of change of the Turkish Dictionary has been studied in this work by making use of“trend analysis”method. This study is based on those dictionaries that were printed and published by Turkish Language Institution in 1959, 1966, 1969, 1974, 1983 and 1988. As a result, it has emerged that the Turkish Dictionary is growing at the rate of 1,66 percent, on average. According to projections, the volume of Turkish vocabulary, which contains 43.508 words at present, (Turkish Dictionary, 1988) is expected to reach around 49.000 by the year 2001. In conclusion, it can be asserted that, while the Turkish vocabulary is growing year by year, it owes this expansion to foreign language elements much more than to its own sources.
