Özet (Çeviri)
Beginning from the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948, the Palestinians and Israelis have been struggling over the same stretch of land, Palestine, which they both claim to be the legitimate base to exercise their national sovereignty. After a long period of intense conflict coupled with unsuccessful peace attempts, the Palestinian-Israeli peace process could at last be launched on 13 September 1993 with the signing of the Declaration of Principles. This thesis provides an analysis of the effect of domestic political opposition within both the Palestinian and Israeli sides on the launching and the progress of the peace process. In order to present the political context within which the dynamics of domestic political opposition has exerted influence on both the launching and the progress of the peace process, a relevant background is needed. With the aim to provide this background, this thesis examines the role of domestic opposition on the process of conflict transformation within both sides. The transformation of the nature of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is analyzed from 1967 until the eruption of the 1990 Gulf Crisis. After the evaluation of the political context and the analysis of the 1990-1993 period, it is argued that the impact of domestic political opposition constituted one of the / important factors which paved the way to the launching of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. With regard to the progress of the peace process, it is demonstrated that the dynamics of domestic political opposition operate in two conflicting dimensions. At the negative dimension, these dynamics constituted a major threat to the future success of the peace process while at the positive dimension, the same dynamics fostered the implementation of the peace agreement. This thesis also examines the major assumptions of the Realist and Global Politics paradigms of international relations with the aim of constructing a relevant theoretical framework for this study. By choosing to employ the Globalist model, a critique of the traditional Realist paradigm is provided. It is asserted that the state-centric Realist framework can no longer provide an adequate explanation of the current issues in the international agenda most of which have been characterized by the increasing role of non-state actors, the growing importance of cognitive factors, and the interdependence between domestic and international politics. A very brief evaluation of the field of Conflict Resolution is also presented because the basic concepts used in this study have been derived from this field. With the analysis of the role of domestic political opposition on the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, this thesis argues that the process of conflict resolution has a complex and often arduous nature. This nature draws attention to the non-unitary character of the parties to a conflict, the interdependence between intra-state and inter-state politics as well as the importance of perceptions in conflictual relationships.
