Özet (Çeviri)

SUMMARY Following the achievements of A. S. Pushkin, M. Yu. Lermontov and N. V. Gogol, the pioneers of 19 th Century Realistic Movement in Russian Literature, I. S. Turgenev (1818-1883) became one of the most successful members of the tradition. His chif aim was to reflect the realities of life. In order to achive what he wanted to do, he chose his characters from among daily life people. The chief characters in three novels studied in this thesis have prototypes. The other charactersin these works are typically vived revelations of those people observed in the daily life of those days. Having complete his sound education in Russia, I. S. Turgenev continued his training in Europe and was able to reflect his European experience in his works. Rudin, which is the first output of his career as a novelist, is the product of a wirter with and experienced starting point. This novel, which is full of Western views, depicts the linoness of a man without a strong will. A Nest of Gentlefolk, the second novel we have examined, is a book in which the nobility is severly criticized. The novel is the second of the auther's fictitious writing and reveals the conflict between his national ideals and those of the West. In Fathers and Sons, the last novel we have studied, the auther sticks to the same tradition in his earlier novels and as he uses the term“Nihilism”for the first time in his books, he attracts considerable interest in Russia. The chief characters of the three novels in question form the chain of“Superfluous Man”. Through the depiction of such pioneering and new characters of the 19th century Russia, the auther has been able to portray people who will take the Russian society to enlightenment and to suggest such people are necessery. The novels are full of numerous types and characters taken from the different layers of the 19th century Russian social classes. The result of the depiction of the inner world of the characters, their relationships and their arguments is a synthesis. Through the arguments between contrasting characters, opposing views are presented. 455In according with the tendency of the Realistic Movement, the characters have been vividly described and every detail about them has been carefully given. Similar vivacity is observed in those parts that describe nature. The lyrical tendency of the auther is obvious in such descriptions. The harmony of nature with the psychological state of the character has been revealed and the emphasis is on the harmonious relationship of man with nature. The presence of an implied narrator is obvious in the three novels. Although three seem to be three different narrative techniques employed, the dominant attitude is that of auctorial. The presentation of the psychological mood of the characters is through interior monologues. The dominant mode of narration is discriptive and the general attitude of the author is critical. The reader has little difficulty in comprehending the language which abound in compound sentences. The charcters are made to use a language that fits their social status. Such an attitude on the part of the writer secures the harmony between the form and content of the novels. 456
