Summary For the last two decades intra-industry trade has became an important issue. Today it constitutes almost one fourth of the world trade. Now its well understood that conventional H-O-S theory cannot explain international trade sufficiently. Therefore intra-industry trade theories are developed as an extension of the H-O-S model. These theories depend on some market structure elements such as pruduct differentiation and economies of scale. Intra-industry trade has some implications for trade liberalization. First, adjustment costs will be lower with intra-industry trade. Second, as a consequence of liberalization, both consumers and firms will be better off as tie number of differentiated products increase and economies of scale expand. It can be said that Turkey's integration with the EC in 1995 may lead to an increase in intra-industry trade and may provide some cost advantage for the Turkish economy. Furthermore adjustment costs may be iow. According to the calculations made for the years between 1989 and 1993, intra-industry trade between EC countries and Turkey is not very high. This may provide a basis for an increase in this kind of trade after the integration. 102
