ABSTRACT AN EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE OF GEOSYNTHETIC STRIP DRAINS HERGÜL, Timuçin M.S. Thesis In Civil Engineering Supervisor: Prof.Dr.Yildiz WASTI February 1 994, 1 1 3 pages The performance of two basic types of geosynthetic band- shaped / strip drains namely composite drain (core surrounded by a geotextile filter and monolithic drains (without a geotextile filter) has been compared by means of radial consolidation tests. Tests were repeated employing the monolithic drain wrapped in the same filter fabric as the composite drain, a cylindrical porous stone and sand drain to contrast the efficiency of different types of drains. Two fine grained soils of varying plasticity and gradation were used, initially at a water content equal to their respective liquid limits in the experiments. The results of radial consolidation tests have been evaluated to compare the rate and amount of consolidation using different drains mkarşılaştırılmasında ve tıkanmanın geosentetik drenlerin performansları üzerindeki muhtemel etkisinin tayininde kullanılmıştır. Kompozlt drenin kullanılan iki zeminde de monolltlk drene göre açık bir şekilde daha etkin davrandığı gözlenmiştir. Bu fark ince daneli zeminde daha belirgin olmuş ve monolltlk drendeki performans düşüklüğü dış yüzeyindeki deliklerin tıkanmasına bağlanmıştır, (lonolîtik drenin geotekstille sarılması sonucu performansının, kompozlt drenle aynı ve hatta daha iyi seviyeye geldiği görülmüştür.

The results of radial consolidation tests have been evaluated to compare the rate and amount of consolidation using different drains mand to assess the possible effect of clogging on the performance of geosynthettc drains, it was observed that f ör the two soils used, the compostte drain clearly performed betler than monoîtthtc draln. The dtfference was more sîgniftcant in the case of f iner soll and poorer performance of monollthfc drain was attrlbuted to cloggîng of hoîes on its vvalls. it was also observed that, wrapping the monolithic drain with the geotextile filter Increased its performance to the same îevel ör even better than the composlte drain.
