ABSTRACT PRIMARY AND SECONDARY INDEX SELECTION FOR MAESTRO 7 İKİNCİ, Alper M.S. in Computer Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Asuman DO?AÇ February, 1994, 124 pages A tool, called MAESTRO 7 (METU Automated indEx Selection Tool f oR Oracle7) is designed and implemented that assists the database administrator in designing an index configuration for a given database application for 0racle7. In order to implement such a tool it is necessary; 1. to automatically derive valid SQL statements and their usage statistics during regular database sessions. 2. to classify the SQL statements that will produce the same execution plan and to accumulate their weights. 3. to decide on plausible columns for indexing. 4. to chose primary indices. iii5. to chose secondary indices. 6. to calculate the benefit of indices by obtaining the cost of executing the queries from the query optimizer. This work has been realized in two M.S. thesis. This thesis, by using the work accomplished in (Erışık,93) as a basis, contains the following implementation; 1. choosing primary indices by considering all combinations of plausible primary indices 2. choosing secondary indices by considering both index maintenance and storage costs 3. calculating the benefit of indices by obtaining the cost of executing the queries from the query optimizer. Execution of The MAESTRO 7 against a sample database demonstrates that the proposed index configuration is the optimum for the test query set.
