Özet

Bu araştırma zihinsel engelli çocukların sağlıklı kardeşlerinin benlik saygısı ve okul başarılarını belirlemek amacıyla tanımlayıcı olarak yapılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamına, Yozgat Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Özel Eğitim İlkokulu ve Mesleki Eğitim Merkezi'nde özel eğitim alan ve 9-18 yaş grubu kardeşi olan 91 zihinsel engelli çocuğun, ailesi ve kendisinin onayı ile araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden sağlıklı kardeşleri alınmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri 1.10.2012-30.06.2013 tarihleri arasında, tanıtıcı bilgi formu, Coopersmith Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Sağlıklı kardeşlerin yıl sonu okul başarı puanları e-okul sisteminden elde edilmiştir. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde; Kolmogrov-smirnov testi, tanımlayıcı istatistikler, Mann-Whitney U testi, Kruskall-Wallis ve Spearman Korelasyon analizleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamına alınan zihinsel engelli çocukların sağlıklı kardeşlerinin % 42.8'inin 12- 14 yaş grubunda ve % 57.1'inin kız olduğu, % 42.8'inin ikinci düzey ilköğretim sınıflarına devam ettiği belirlenmiştir. Annelerin % 44'ünün 34-38 yaş grubunda, % 56.0'ının ilkokul mezunu olduğu, babaların % 32.9'unun 35-39 yaş grubunda ve % 53.8'inin ilkokul mezunu olduğu ve ailelerin % 50.5'inin gelirinin giderden az olduğu belirlenmiştir. Zihinsel engelli çocukların sağlıklı kardeşlerinin benlik saygısı puan ortalaması 59.2±14.9 olarak belirlenmiş ve % 69.2'sinin orta düzeyde, % 27.5'nin ise yüksek düzeyde benlik saygısına sahip olduğu bulunmuştur. Araştırmada sağlıklı kardeşlerin benlik saygılarının zihinsel engelli kardeşin cinsiyeti ve babanın çalışma durumundan etkilendiği bulunmuştur (p<0.05). Sağlıklı kardeşlerin %60.4'ünün yıl sonu okul başarı derecesinin“iyi”olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bu araştırmada sağlıklı kardeşlerin benlik saygısı ile okul başarı dereceleri arasında ilişki saptanmamıştır. Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda; zihinsel engelli çocukların sağlıklı kardeşlerinin benlik saygısı ve okul başarılarının kardeşinin engelinden etkilenmeyecek şekilde desteklenmesi, ailelerin sağlıklı çocukların günlük gereksinimleri ve okulla ilgili performansları için yeterli zaman ayırmaları, aile ve okul işbirliğinin geliştirilmesi ve hemşireler tarafından zihinsel engelli çocuklar, sağlıklı kardeşleri ve ailelerin özel olarak desteklenmesi önerilmektedir.

This descriptive study was conducted in order to determine the self-respect and school success of the healthy siblings of the trainable mentally disabled children. The healthy siblings of 91 mentally disabled children who are getting private training at Yozgat Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Private Education Primary School and Vocational Training Center and who have siblings between the ages of 9 and 18 were included in the study. They and their families have given their consent to participate in the study. The data of the study was collected by informative data form and Coopersmith Self- Esteem Scale between 1.10.2012- 30.06.2013. The school grades of the healthy siblings at the end of the year were obtained from e-school system. Kolmogrov-smirnov test, descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskall-Wallis and Spearman Correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. It was determined that, of the healthy siblings of the mentally disabled children included in the study, 42.8 % were between the ages of 12-14 and 57.1 % were female, 42.8 % were attending second-level primary school classes. It was found that 44 % of their mothers were between the ages of 34 and 38 , 56.0 % of them had primary school education, 32.9 % of their fathers were between the ages of 35 and 39 and 53.8 % of them had primary school education and the incomes of % 50.5 of the families were lower than the expenses. It was found that the self-respect point average of the healthy siblings of the mentally disabled children was 59.2±14.9; and 69.2 % of them had medium level, 27.5 % of them high level of self-respect. It was found that the self-respect of the healthy siblings was affected by the gender of the mentally disabled sibling and the employment status of the father (p<0.05). The school success level of 60.4 % of the healthy siblings at the end of the year was found to be 'good'. In this study, no relationship was established between the self-respect of the healthy siblings and their levels of success at school. In accordence with these results: supporting the self-respect and school success of the healthy siblings of the mentally disabled children in a way that they would not be affected by their siblings' disability, the families' sparing enough time for the daily needs of the healthy children and their performences at school, improving the cooperation between parents and school and personal support by the nurse to the mentally disabled children, their healthy siblings and to the families are all recommended.
