Keywods : Si3N4, α - β –SiAlON, cutting tools. SiAlON's which is known as silicium aluminium oxy nitride based silicium nitride, is one of the high-tech ceramic materials. This, which can be used in different places, is one of the important ceramics technically. It's made of sintering reaction with alumina (Al2O3), silicium nitride (Si3N4) and aluminium nitride (AlN). The most important features of that are high temperature resistance, corosion resistance at high temperatures, because of their low thermal expansion coefficients comparing to the other ceramics, very good thermal shock resistance, having low density and protecting hardness at high temperatures. Because of this, SiAlON's can be used at places required high hardness and resistance (as cutting components at processing technoogies), at places that high temperature corosion is occured (like turbine components), in producing ball bearing. In this study, it's researched that the performance of using β-SiAlON ceramics that is produced from Si3N4 powders, as a cutting point. With using liquid phase sintering facilitative oxide additives which is made with calculating as for the equality of z=1 at general formul of β-SiAlON, powder compositions had been made. This powder compositions had been conveyed to maximum pure density after being made to the form of cutting point before sintering at 250 MPa pressure at pressing cold isostatic. After that, sintering process of samples at 1450-1750 C, at 30-150 min. waiting moments in high temperature graphite oven in protecting nitrogen atmosphere, had been made. After sintering, density results of samples had been obtained as for Archimed principle. Micro-structure analyses of samples had been got with scanning electron microscope (SEM). With making XRD analyses, Si3N4 phase transformations and approximate α- β rates had been determined. For researching mechanical features of materials, hardness and breaking density rates had been studied. Strength tests had been made under the load of 1 kg at Vickers strength machine. Breaking density tests had been calculated at the same machine with using the formul on crack lengths with technique of Indentation. After that, β-SiAlON cutting tools which is made at this work and WC cutting tools which is used in industry had been subjected to cutting process of AISI 4140 steel which is hardened in the same experiment conditions. High improvement on processing hardened AISI 4140 steel with β-SiAlON cutting tools and a smooth surface had been obtained at cutting forces.
