Özet

ABSTRACT Discoursed Problems of Jordanian EFL Students in Argumentative Writing. With Special Reference to Conjunctive Relations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the discoursal problems manifested in the argumentative written texts of Jordanian university English-majors. A special attention is paid to conjunctive relations from the cohesive categories in addition to the violations interrupting the coherence of texts so that both the formal and functional types of inappropriateness can be accounted for. The material of the study consisted of fifty English texts of argumentative function written by junior students at Yarmouk University/ Jordan. The study is an initial attempt to answer the following questions: 1. What is the relationship between cohesion and coherence in the subjects' argumentative texts? 2. What is the quality and quantity of conjunctive relations actually used in the subjects' argumentations? 3. What type of relationship holds between conjunctives and coherence in argumentative texts? 4. What types of problems do students face in the use of conjunctive relations? 5. What types of coherence breaks do the student writers make in the texts?vi Using Bamberg's (1984) composition evaluation scale, the texts were evaluated for cohesion and coherence by three raters. Then, they were analysed to explore the patterns of conjunctive relations actually used, instances of their inappropriate use and to explore cases of coherence interruption. The correlation between the variables of the study viz., cohesion x coherence; and conjunctives x coherence was computed by using the holistic scores for cohesion and coherence; and the percentages of successful employment of conjunctive relations. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Cohesion significantly correlated with coherence in the subjects' argumentative texts. 2. Conjunctive relations significantly affected the coherence of the subjects' written persuasive discourse. 3. Conjunctive relations proved to be problematic areas specially the additive, adversative and causal connectors. Violations of the use of conjunctive relations were due to incorrect use, redundancy, absence of necessary connector, wrong replacement and interference from Li (Arabic) structures. 4. Coherence breaks were attributed to irrelevance of ideas, vagueness, illogical reasoning, redundancy and lack of reckoning with the opposition.
