Özet

VI SUMMARY The art and knowhow of ceramic -ma king had been known by man since about 7000 years. However, almost no remarkab le progress was achieved in this field, until after the industrial revolution. Since then, ceramic technology has shown an enormous development and as- a result of this fact, ceramics became preferred material in many different areas such as medicine, electronics, and textile industry etc. Today ceramic- making is more than just a muddy clay- paste cooking. Nowadays, the process of ceramic -ma king is mainly directed according to the special needs- of the consuming area. Especially technological fine ceramics must be designed to have certain thermal, electrical, mechanical properties. Thus making than suitable materials for special areas. Naturally this would mean that, the process of making fine ceramics with special properties, is a combina tion of a series of carefully controlled different steps. That is, the main ingredients, the relative rations of the se ingredients, the necessary special additives, drying, glazing, furnacing operations, must all be very carefully designed and controlled. This work aims to summarize the history, the prog ress, the present day technology and the future prospects of the fine ceramics. In order to achieve this, after a brief introduction abut the history the classification of ceramics (Chap. 1), main ingredients, additives and their properties are covered in the preceeding chapters <Chap. 2- 4). The thermal operations and glazing are handled in Chap-Vii ters 5 and 6 respectively. Technological ceramics and their uses are covered in Chapter 7. The potential uses of tech nological ceramics however, can not be limited with the few pages covered in this thesis. No doubt, specially designed new technological ceramics, wil 1 replace a number of metals, polymeric substances and steel in very near future.
