Özet
Bu çalışma, Nizâ-ı İlm ü Din adlı eseri düşünce tarihi perspektifiyle incelemeyi hedeflemektedir. Nizâ-ı İlm ü Din, J. William Draper'in History of The Conflict Between Religion and Science adlı kitabının tercümesi ve mütercim Ahmed Midhat Efendi'nin bu kitaba yazdığı şerh ve tenkitleri içermektedir. Bu eser, Draper ve Midhat Efendi'nin gözüyle XIX. yüzyıl Batı düşüncesi ve Osmanlı düşüncesinin din-bilim ilişkisine bakışını yansıtmaktadır. Kitap, Osmanlı'da din-bilim ilişkisi tartışmalarını içeren ilk müstakil eserlerden biridir.Tez; giriş, üç ana bölüm, ek ve sonuç kısımlarından oluşmaktadır. Giriş kısmında konunun çerçevesi belirlenmiş ve din-bilim ilişkisi tartışmalarının Batı'da ve Osmanlı'daki durumu hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Birinci bölümde Ahmed Midhat Efendi ve Draper bu konudaki çalışmalarıyla tanıtılmıştır. Ayrıca eser şekil ve muhtevâ yönünden incelenmektedir. Kitap Hıristiyanlık ve İslâm dinlerinin bilimle ilişkisini içerdiği için ikinci bölüm Hıristiyanlık-bilim ilişkisine, üçüncü bölüm de İslâm-bilim ilişkisine ayrılmıştır. İkinci bölümde Draper ve Ahmed Midhat'ın Hıristiyanlık-bilim ilişkisine dair değerlendirmeleri yer almaktadır. Üçüncü bölüm, İslâm-bilim ilişkisine dair her iki yazarın değerlendirmelerinin yanında Osmanlı'da dönemin İslâm-bilim tartışmalarını da içermektedir. Böylece eserin bu tartışmalar içerisinde durduğu yer görülmektedir. Ayrıca üçüncü bölüme ek olarak eserde yer alan Midhat Efendi'ye ait ?Ulûm ve İslâm? başlıklı ek bölüme de yer verilmiştir.

This study aims to examine the work Nizâ-ı İlm ü Din with the perspective of intellectual history. Nizâ-ı İlm ü Din contains the translation of History of The Conflict Between Religion and Science by J. William Draper and the commentaries and criticism of the translator, Ahmed Midhat Efendi. This work reflects the XIXth century view of Western and Ottoman?s thoughts about religion-science relationship through the eyes of Draper and Midhat Efendi. The book which is the first self-contained works of the Ottoman Empire contains the debates on the relationship between religion and science.The thesis has consisted of three main sections, additional parts and result. In the introduction, framework of the topic has been defined and the debates on science-religion relationship both in the west and in the Ottoman have been mentioned. In the first section Ahmed Midhat and Draper have been introduced with the studies on this issue. In addition, the work has been examined in terms of form and content. As the book contains the relationship between science and Christianity and Islam, second section has been divided into the relationship between science and Christianity. The third section, the relationship between Islam and science. In the second chapter the evaluations of Draper and Ahmet Midhat on relationship between Christianity and science has taken place. The third chapter has been included both assessments and debates of two authors on relationship between science and Islam in the Ottoman Empire.-era.
