Bu eserlerin en önemlilerinden üçü Philip Caputo'nün A Rumour of War'u (1977), Michael Herr'un Dispatches'i (1977) ve James Webb'in Fields of Fire'ıdır (1978).

ABSTRACT 1960s have witnessed the most extensive public demonstrations of the American history. Both the blacks and the women struggling for social, political and economic rights and the youth expressing their sensitivity to social issues and - global problems were organizing massive activities throughout the country. The outbreak of the Vietnam War, accelerating these efforts, contributed to a re-examination of American values. The Vietnam War was a natural consequence of an important development that took place in the aftermath of the Second World War, that is, the emergence of the two superpower which promoted a global political polarization. After the World War II, these two superpowers concentrated their efforts to expand their spheres of influence. During the Second World War, the Soviet Union, while invading Germany, also invaded a number of other European countries to which it dictated communism. Furthermore, the Soviet Union was providing all kinds of aid to the national liberation movements in the Third World countries to achieve its aim. Meanwhile the USA started aid programs to different countries to increase its allies. As a result of this, the Vietnam War, one of many incidents which led to a confrontation of the UnitedVI States and the Soviet Union, broke out. Americans considered the war as an opportunity for the recreation and redefinition of the national identity. Two basic traditions have been influential in the forging of the American character. One of these, the“Frontier”tradition was inspired by the westward movement during the nation ' s early attempts to settle in this continent which resulted in the destruction of the Indians. This westward expansion, though contributed to the growth of democracy in America till the emergence of a centralized state structure, was, nevertheless, a historically limited phenomenon. Yet Americans turned it into a myth and regarded it as the cornerstone of the American identity. The other crucial tradition, the“Puritan”tradition, due to its adverse effects is often rejected by the society. The fact is that the American character is almost entirely based on this tradition. The distinctive major traits of Puritanism are hostility towards democracy, hypocrisy regarding a number of issues, assumption of having been assigned a special mission by God and racism as the natural consequence of such an outlook. The Vietnam War acted as a mirror to expose the true American identity. In this war, the assumed“Frontier”Vİİ spirit which Americans had hoped to recreate was inverted, and the fact that they are essentially“Puritans”was disclosed. Many American writers have attempted to make use of this experience as a means of compelling the society to face its true self. This concern is more apparent in the works written after 1970. Three of the most important of these works are Michael Herr's Dispatches (1977), Philip Caputo ' s A Rumour of War (1977), and James Webb's Fields of Fire (1978). The writers of these three works emphasized that the Vietnam experience is an extension of the American cultural heritage. However, the American society preferred to ignore such an invaluable experience that could enable them to discover their true identity. In the years following the Vietnam War, they continued to act on the Puritan concerns concealing it under the“Frontier”mask. As a result, it does not seem possible, at least in the near future, that the American society can give up this delusion and see its true face.
