11 ABSTRACT The main aim of this study is to display an insight to some interesting and similar elements found in the plays of Joe Orton. It is essential to give details of his background and of how he became a writer first in order to be able to explain and specify the cause of his social outlook that is reflected in his plays. The introductory chapter and chapter two will be explaining in detail his social, political and theatrical views, and giving a general information about his work. Chapter three will be examining the theme of intrusion and Orton's intruders. The argument here is that in our day and age we are all constantly exposed to different kinds of intrusions, and every play Orton wrote, have either intruders that knock on people's doors or intrusion into lives and values or both. So analyzing his plays under this frame will reveal the similarities in his work. Last but not least, this chapter will contain Orton's major plays that have quite significant themes of intrusion and casual intruders. The final chapter will once again summarize types of intrusions and their reasons and will conclude this dissertation by displaying how and why Orton uses comedy to shock and disturb his audience.
