ABSTRACT In the present study, the role of supportive communication and instrumental support from spouse and significant others (SO) was investigated in 76 post-mastectomy breast cancer patients. The instruments used included Spielberger's State-Trait Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory and a structured interview developed by the authors. Supportive communication was operationalzed as feeling lonely in the presence of spouse/SO, frequency of spouse's/SO's sharing feelings and thoughts about the patient, frequency of spouse's /SO's enquiring about the patient's feelings and thoughts, overall perception of moral support from the spouse /So and availability of someone to talk to whenever the patient is in need of moral support. Results showed that supportive communication from the spouse was related to psychological well-being whereas emotional support from SO and instrumental support from spouse /SO were not related with psychological well-being. Besides, within the context of patients' open communication regarding their illness, the item 'Patients' currently opening up their feeling and thoughts regarding breast cancer' was also found to be related to psychological well-being. Additionaly, current marital satisfaction was found to differentiate the level of depression and anxiety in these patients. Results are discussed further in the light of the literature regarding the effects of social support.
