ABSTRACT There are rapid improvements and dramatical changes in the the overall technology in our world. All those have certain impacts on the ways human beings run their businesses and on the human life. The most improvement has been in the computer technology with the development of advanced computer machines. Today, there is a widespread use of the computers or computer controlled systems almost in all fields of businesses and social life. The recent studies in the computer technology are focused on the development of artificial intelligent systems, that is the computers that think like human beings. There are no such systems in the business yet, but the progress in the artificial intelligence yielded to commercially viable systems called expert systems. This thesis has been prepared on the expert systems that are widely used today by numerous organizations abroad. An expert system is a computer program that has knowledge about a field of expertise and is able to solve the problems or perform the tasks in that field with the knowledge and problem-solving thecniques derived from the human experts. Being knowledge based and distinguished from the traditional computer programs and decision- support systems that require well defined algorithms with their artificial intelligence mechanism, expert systems have unsurpassed superiorities. The combination of expert systems and today's advanced computer technology provides various benefits such as cost reduction and improved quality that have certain impacts on cost effectivenes and organizational efficiency sought by the organizations. Expert systems can provide assistance in decision making process and help the effective usage of corporate data and information in a supporting way for the decisions to be made. They can support the managers in performing their tasks and help to understand the dynamics in their organizations. In manufacturing companies, expert systems can be employed in the manufacturing system for the control and diagnosis of the operations and to provide assistance to the operators in identifying and resolving problems in case of faults.There are various potential areas for expert system applications such as management, administration, science, engineering, industrial, financial, legal, military and medical. In the developed countries, especially in the USA, there exist numerous successful expert system applications currently being used by the organizations. The benefits promised by the expert systems and successful applications abroad draw the attention of the Turkish organizations during the past few years. This interest caused the Turkish organizations to start projects for the development of their own expert system applications.
