-93- SUMMARY“Five Hours with Mario”begins with the obituary of Mario Diez Collado, the hero of the novel. This obituary has value for us because it shows whom we will meet on the following pages of the novel. Then we meet Carmen, in mourning widow and her relatives who are there to share her grief. Carmen wants to be alone with her husband for the last time, after pages full of condolence. Carmen comes in the room with Bible in her hands which Mario had read time after time and underlined. Since then the last five hours period begins. Carmen interprete the ideas symbolizing her husband's views personally after reading this underlined passages and tells her comments on each, of which she couldn't explain for years. For the reader the relationship between Carmen and Mario displays the unhappiness of two people who come from different cultures and have different philosophy, as a flow of pictures. Carmen is almost collapsing with exhaustion because of the sensitivity she had lived for five hours.-94- When she realizes that the man she lived with for twenty- three ears hod passed away she also realizes its seriousness. The events occurring as a burst of things came together up to that time, let the way to an end with Carmen's useless beggings for Mario's return. However, it is too late to do something, even the corpse is ready for the funeral. Carmen who gets out of the room very tired and exhausted meets her son Mario in the kitchen. Mario wanting to help her see the truth, tries to explain her that being slave of fixed ideas for years is of no use. The novel ends with the coming of the grave diggers to take the corpse.
