ABSTRACT This study was carried out to discover the weak points of writing tasks in Building Strategies, and to make some suggestions in order to compensate for the weaknesses. Building Strategies is a coursebook written by B. Abbs and I. Freebairn, and is used by the second year students at Gazi University. The purpose of the first chapter is to explain the problem and the aim of our study. The second chapter begins with the comment on the nature of communication and continue with the place of writing in the major methods of language teaching. Chapter three focuses on different approaches in teaching writing, types of knowledge needed to produce a text; and on the problems in writing instruction. In chapter four, we discussed the basic types of writing tasks. We analysed, in chapter five, Building Strategies in terms of basic writing tasks. Chapter six includes our classroom application, and the last chapter of our thesis presents the conclusion. In the appendix, it is possible to find some suggested types of writing tasks devised to compensate for the weaknesses in Building Strategies. i
