SUMMARY KATAR, Mehmet:“Repentance in Judaism, Christianity and Islam: A Study in Comparative Religion”, (Ph. D. Thesis, Supervised by Professor Dr. Abdurrahman Küçük). This work comprises a preface, an Introduction, four chapters and a conclusion» This study deals with“sin”, which is the reason for repentance in the introduction. It also examines the relationship of sin to repentance. This is followed by discussions on the significance of repentance in three major religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Chapter one, it demonstrates the concept of repentance and the changes it has undergone in Judaism throughout its history in relation to the changes in Judaic concept of repentance, the ceremonies held as acts of repentance and the spesific times for those ceremonies are also shown. In chapter two, it focuses on the concept of repentance and its practice in Christianity. The changes that the Christian concept of repentance has undergone are also discussed in a cronological manner. The periods specified for repentance and the ceremonies held towards repentance are also examined. In Chapter three, it discusses the Islamic concept of repentance. However, the present study does not discuss themes of changce or ceremonies concerning the issue of repentance in Islam, as it finds no trace of change or ceremony in the Islamic concept of repentance. In Chapter four, it presents a brief comparison demonstrating the points of unity and diversity with regard to the concept of repentance in three religions in question; Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In Conclusion, it finds that despite different approaches the theory or the practice of“repentance”-all three religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam- accepts the repentance as the way to achieve forgiveness.
