Özet

Bu tezin amacı modern dünyadaki hiççiliğin yıkıcı etkilerinin akademide ne derecede üstesinden gelindiğini göstermektir. Bu açıdan, David Lodge'un iki kampüs romanı, Yerleri Değiştirme: İki Kampüsün Hikayesi (1975) ve Küçük Dünya: Bir Akademik Macera (1984)'nın Friedrich Nietzsche'nin Böyle Buyurdu Zerdüşt: Herkesin ve Hiçkimsenin Kitabı (1883-85) ışığı altında çoğu akademisyen olan ana karakterler açısından incelenecektir. Böyle Buyurdu Zerdüşt'teki elçi Zerdüşt Nietzsche'nin bizzat sözcüsü olduğundan, bu tez aslında David Lodge romanlarını Nietzsche'nin fikirleri ışığı altında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu açıdan, bu tez Zerdüşsel (Nietzschesel) kavramlar olan ?erk istenci?, ?sonsuz döngü? ve ?üstün insan?a daha yakın bir bakış açısı sağlamaktadır. Ve bu tez Lodge karakterlerinin ne derece tam bir erk istenci sağladıklarını, sonsuz döngüyü neşeli bir kabullenmeyle karşıladıklarını ve üstün insan olmak için kendilerini aştıklarını göstermektedir. Bu üç kavramın işlenmesiyle, bu tez Lodge'un ana karakterlerinin modern dünyadaki hiççiliğin neden olduğu boşluk ve depresyonun olumsuz etkilerinden ne derece kurtulduklarını açığa vurmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Özet (Çeviri)

The aim of this thesis is to display the extent to which the destructive effects of nihilism in the modern world are overcome in the academia. In this view, David Lodge?s two campus novels, Changing Places: A Tale of Two Campuses (1975) and Small World: An Academic Romance (1984) will be examined in terms of the main characters who are mostly academics in the light of Friedrich Nietzsche?s Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None (1883-85). As the prophet Zarathustra in Thus Spoke Zarathustra is the mouthpiece of Nietzsche himself, this thesis aims at studying Lodge?s novels in the light of Nietzsche?s ideas indeed. In this respect, this thesis provides a closer look into Zarathustrian (Nietzschean) concepts of ?will to power?, ?eternal recurrence? and ?overman?, and it reveals to what extent Lodge?s main characters can achieve a full ?will to power?, attain a joyful acceptance of ?eternal recurrence?, and overcome themselves to become ?overman?. With the elaboration of these three concepts, this thesis aims to uncover the ways in which Lodge?s main characters recover from the negative effects of futility and depression caused by nihilism in the modern world.
