Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, öğrencilerin okuma sürecinde karşılaştıkları ve anlamını bilmedikleri sözcüklerin anlamlarını bağlamdan yararlanarak kestirme stratejisinin, okuduğunu anlama başarısı üzerindeki etkisini araştırmaktır.Çalışma, deneysel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak Başkent Üniversitesi hazırlık sınıfına devam eden öğrencilerden oluşan bir deney grubu ve bir kontrol grubu ile yürütülmüştür. Öğrencilerin İngilizce okuduğunu anlama başarı düzeylerini ölçmek amacı ile 40 maddeden oluşan bir okuduğunu anlama testi, veri toplama aracı olarak kullanılmıştır. Deney grubu ve kontrol grubunun son testteki başarı düzeylerini karşılaştırmak ve grupların süreçte kaydettikleri değişimi belirlemek amacı ile, verilerin analizinde Mann-Whitney U Testi ve Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar Testi kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin süreçte yaşadıkları deneyimi ortaya çıkarmak ve sözcük anlamını kestirme stratejisi konusundaki görüşleri hakkında bilgi edinmek için, deney grubuyla görüşme yapılmış; görüşmede elde edilen veriler betimsel analiz yapılarak incelenmiştir.Elde edilen verilere göre, sözcük anlamını kestirme stratejisi öğretimi verilen deney grubu ile geleneksel öğretime devam edilen kontrol grubu arasında, son testteki okuduğunu anlama başarı düzeyi yönünden, deney grubu lehine anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur. Görüşme yöntemiyle elde edilen nitel veriler de, kelime anlamını kestirme stratejisinin, öğrencilerin okuma derslerine yönelik görüşlerini olumlu yönde etkilediğini göstermektedir.Konuyla ilgili yapılmış benzer çalışmalar ve bu araştırmada elde edilen bulgulara dayanılarak, yabancı dilde okuma becerisinin öğretiminde kelime anlamını kestirme stratejisinden yararlanılmasının, okuduğunu anlama başarısını olumlu yönde etkilediği sonucuna varılabilir.

The aim of this study is to search the effect of teaching foreign language students the strategies of word guessing on reading comprehension success.The study has been conducted with experimental method, in which an experimental group and a control group consisting of students studying at Ba§kent University Preparatory Classes took part. A reading comprehension test which consists of 40 items has been used in order to gather the data about the effect of using word guessing strategies on reading comprehension success. Mann-Whitney U Test and Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test have been used in order to compare the success of the experimental group and the control group students in the post test and to determine the change in the groups' success level during the process. Moreover, to determine the experience of the students during the process and to find out their ideas about word guessing, an interview has been conducted with the experimental group students. Qualitative analysis has been used in order to interpret the data gathered with the interview.From the data, statistically meaningful difference has been found between the experimental group with which the word guessing strategies have been studied and the control group with which the traditional methods have been used. The statistically meaningful difference is found in favor of the experimental group. The quantitative data which are obtained through the interview have also indicated that the word guessing strategy has a positive effect on the students ideas about reading.In regard to the similar researches formerly carried out in this field and the data accessed through this study, it can be affirmed that the use of word guessing strategy in reading comprehension in a foreign language affects the students' reading comprehension in a positive way.
