Akoğlu, Sabriye, God, Belief and Fate in Cicero; The Place of assensio inFree Will, phD Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Filiz Öktem, ıı-240p.This dissertation presents a critical analysis on god, belief and fate conceptsin Cicero and the place of assensio, as an essential faculty of human mind in freewill. In Cicero?s philosophical works, De natura deorum, De divinatione and Defato form a projected triplet. In De natura deorum, Cicero treats the themes of godand belief from the point of Epicurean, Stoic and Academic disciplines. For fate, Defato is throughly studied and special attention is given to the concepts of assensioand free will. Tracing the assensio in Academica, Academia?s doctrine of epokhe, given as sustinere assensionem in Cicero, is ascertained and discussed. Dedivinatione, in which Cicero examines superstition and makes clear that there is noplace for it in true religion, is not included in this study. However, the relevant partsof De divinatione and the other works of Cicero are considered and taken in.Cicero describes his De natura deorum as a three volumes of work whichcontains the discussion of every question under that head. His address aboutreligion and the matters pertinents to religion is like a remark which would keepleading as long as men exist. In De fato, Cicero defines freedom of the will as voluntas; this is a featurethat in nostra potestate. He denies the influence upon human character ofenvironment, which he calls naturae contagio. It implies necessary sequence ofcause and effect. Moral obligation can be inculcated by will, effort and discipline.Universal causation implies fate, but not necessity. Some causes are fortuitous.Assensio functions as a power that mediate between sensation and impulses and ineach case, essentially belongs to the self. A sensation is only an alternative to select, like a choice left in our open palm. It does not impel us to act accordingly. Thefaculty that answers this, is assensio. We can make it our choice, our merit, ourobligation or not, by giving or withholding assent and shape our outlook. In Academica Cicero reveals the epistemology of Academia. The criterion oftruth arises from senses, yet is not in the senses: The judge of things is the mind;and it alone perceives that which is eternally simple and uniform and true to its ownquality. Academia holds that, all the things supposed to fall within the province ofthe senses are entirely unperceptive and accordingly, for this portion of things theyuse the word of opinabilis. Even if anything could be perceived, nevertheless, themere habit of assensio appears dangerous and slippery, and therefore preferablyall assent is to be withheld.
