SUMMARY Scientific activities of Taqî al-Dîn b* Maruf (1521-1585), who founded Istanbul Observatory, have not yet been given the attention they deserve. Although he dealt with the various branches of science, up to now, only one of his works, among many others, a zij, entitled Sidra al-Muntahâ, has been able to be the subject of careful investigations. In this thesis to which the title“The Application of the Decimal System to Trigonometry and, Astronomy by Famous XVI 'th Century Astronomer Taql al-Din”, is given by us, we also have investigated another zij by Taqî al-Din, Cerlda al-Durar va Har Î da al-Fikar, and tried to determine the significance of the book in the history of mathematics and astronomy. Carî da al-Durar contains the descriptions of the arithmetical, astronomical and astrological concepts. The most original feature of the book is its proposal to use the decimal fractions and th«( application of this kind of fractions to trigonometry and spherical astronomy. Thiscontribution represents an important stage within the progress of above mentioned sciences. It seems that; Taqî al-Din's knowledge about the decimal fractions is more extensive than Simon Stevin (1548-1620) ' s who was his contemporary. The book, beside its calendarial and ecliptical tables, contains a great deal of arithmetical and observational tables concerning the observations of the sun, the moon and the fixed stars. The large part of these observations must have been made following the destruction of the observatory. In the earlier researches, any clue relating to the TaqI al-Din's interest in astrology has not been encountered.
