DETERMINATION OF THE POLICIES RELATED TO APPLICATION SYSTEMSOF THE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES IN TURKEY)ø/ø=3(=ø.2ö/8The aim of the study is whether organic agriculture could be an answer or not, or whatthe answer should be for the sustainability concept in Turkey. In this study, sustainableagriculture concept was examined in detail and analysed the sustainable agricultural systems.For this purpose the study is containing two main parts. First one is what the present situationabout sustainable agriculture is, and the other one is what its future should be like in Turkey.So, it was searched for all sustainable agricultural systems in the world along with theliteratures. Questionnaires were used to explain present situation of organic agriculture inTurkey, to explore whether this system is common and applicable in the meaning ofsustainability.Questionnaires were directed towards 163 farmers, 8 control and certificationorganisations, and 11 processor and exporter firms involved in organic agriculture.Meaning of holding size was 94,82 decar and organic farmland was 45,59 decar in theexamined farms. The rate of contract farming was 71,78%. The contract firms met farmersneeds about knowledge for organic techniques. Firms were purchasing of organic productsfrom their contract farms and also other processor firms. The main problems of the firms werelack of knowledge about organic farming and, high costs of production.The organic agriculture is developed as a new sector in agricultural trade in Turkey.The processor and exporter firms are main player of the sector. But, producers have notsufficient knowledge about the organic farming techniques. The national policies are neededthat, not only organic agriculture, but also other sustainable agricultural systems.
