vn ABSTRACT MODEL-BASED AND MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL KARAER, Özlem Msc in Chemical Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Beno Kuryel July, 2005 In this project, Model Based Process Control (MBC) was studied to provide a theoretical background for Advanced Process Control, to develop and derive the appropriate transfer functions and to apply the theory on examples provided from the literature MBC has the target of controlling systems that explicitly embed a process model in the control algorithm. The basic idea of MBC is to use the inverse of the process transfer function as the controller. It was presented two different forms for the unconstrained controller :. The transfer function form illustrated by the Internal Model Control (IMC) technique and Inferental Control (IC) technique.. The unconstrained optimization form of Model Predictive Control. Model-based control is not a replacement for traditional single-loop controllers. Rather, it complements the traditional methods. The theory of model-based control gives additional valuable insights into the way traditional single-loop PID controllers are tuned and operated. Internal Model Control is a method for designing feedback controllers to force the output of an inherently stable process to respond in a desired manner to a setpoint change, and counter the effects of disturbances that enter directly into the process output It uses a linear or linearized process model which is a perfect representation of the stable process and inverts parts of the model for use as a controller for the process. Some portions of a linear process model cannot be inverted. These noninvertible factors include time delays and instabilities. A linear filter can be added to make the process model invertible. The filtervııı parameters then are available for adjusting the aggressiveness of the IMC controller. While IMC controller implementations are becoming more popular, the standard industrial controllers remain the proportional (P), proportional plus integral (PI), and the proportional plus integral and derivative (PID) controllers. In this work it was shown how to approximate the IMC controller for a limited class of processes with PI and PID controllers. There exist a number of processes in which the primary variable to be controlled is difficult to measure or is a sampled measurement with long delay in the sampling and analysis process. So, inferential control uses secondary measurements to simultaneously infer and counter the effect of disturbances on the primary output variable. In this work, we only unconstrained Model Predictive Control (MPC). The MPC control calculations were based on both current measurements and model predictions. The control. was to calculate moves (input changes) that make the corrected predictions as close to a reference trajectory as possible. Thus, an optimization approach was employed and the control problem was converted into an optimization problem by defining an objective function, which captures the controller requirements. The dynamic model for MPC can be either a physical model or an empirical model. However, industrial applications of MPC traditionally have been based on discrete-time, linear, empirical models offer the advantage that they can represent stable processes with unusual dynamic behavior that cannot be accurately described by simple transfer function models. Their main disadvantage is the large number of model parameters. This thesis aimed to comprehend and gain the ability to apply the theoretical background of the contemporary advanced process control techniques. The inverse Laplace operations of a few of the process transfer functions which were very difficult were directly taken from the literature. But, the vast majority of the derivations and inversions were realistically done in this work.
