Özet

ABSTRACT YEĞENOĞLU, Metin. Michel Foucault on Education and Subjectivity, Master's Thesis, Ankara, 2006. The main aim of this study is to understand the contributions that the thoughts of French thinker Michel Foucault on modern schooling can make to understand the modern school and the subjectivities promoted by it. In this context, the three axis of Foucault's works - power, truth and ethics - elaborated and the his limited number of works that considered education are analyzed in the context of the general framework of his thoughts and the works of his successors on education. The main argument of this study is that school is an institution of confinement in the two meanings of the term; it both confines people to a place and to an identity. Although school functions as a confining institution in both meanings of the term, it is argued that in educational processes school does not have a determining status and individuals have their own programs in the process. Keywords Michel Foucault, Modern School, Subjectivity, Education, Disciplinary Power
