Özet
Ill ABSTRACT This research was performed to identify the study habits and attitudes of 5th grade students. In this research survey method was used. The sampling was selected from the schools where new teaching programme was implemented during 2004 - 2005 season and the questionnaires which were delivered to 558 5th grade students studying in these schools were assessed. Two different instruments were used in this research. The first one was used for identifying students' socioeconomical status and the other, developed by Brown- Holtzman called“Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes”(SSHA), was used for measuring their study habits and attitudes. Moreover students' 4th and 5th grades transcipts scores were taken in order to determine students' achievement levels. Frequencies, percentages of students' gender, socio economical status, achievement level, classroom athmosphere, parental education level, mother's working status were calculated. The mean scores for study orientations were calculated and according to gender, socioeconomical status, achievement level, studying environment, parental educational status and mother's working status, their differences were tested. When the subgroups were equal or more than 15, parametrics tests (t-test, one way variance analysis) and if the subgroups were less than 15, nonparametric tests ( Mann- Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis H) were used (p<0.05). For the relationship between students' study habits and attitudes and sub totals of both, correlations were calculated. The relationships between study orientations and gender, socio economic status, achievement level, study environment, parental educational status and mother's working status were tested. At the same time every single item on the questionaires were coded by computer assist and also frequency and percentage tables were drawn.IV The results in this research were:. Students' study attitudes scores were higher than study habits scores. The most important factor affecting primary school students' study orientations was teacher approval. However, delay avoidence had the lowest scores.. The study orientation scores of girls was higher than the scores of boys.. The soci-oeconomics status affected students study orientation.. Achievement level affected students' study orientation.. Being in an environment making studying possible affected students' study orientation.. Parental educational status affected students study orientation. Fathers' educational status affected study orientation positively. While considering mothers' educational status, study orientation scores of students were highest if mothers were secondary or high school graduate.
